The question, of course, is what all these dopamine neurons are up to. The researchers call this the ‘ anticipatory phase’ and argue that the purpose of this activity is to help us predict the arrival of our favourite part. What is rather more significant is the finding that the dopamine neurons in the caudate- a region of the brain involved in learning stimulus-response associations, and in anticipating food and other ‘reward’ stimuli - were at their most active around 15 seconds before the participants’ favourite moments in the music. As these two regions have long been linked with the experience of pleasure, this finding isn’t particularly surprising. The first thing they discovered is that music triggers the production of dopamine - a chemical with a key role in setting people’s moods - by the neurons (nerve cells) in both the dorsal and ventral regions of the brain. Because the scientists were combining methodologies (PET and fMRI), they were able to obtain an impressively exact and detailed portrait of music in the brain. They then asked the subjects to bring in their playlist of favourite songs - virtually every genre was represented, from techno to tango - and played them the music while their brain activity was monitored. After screening 217 individuals who responded to advertisements requesting people who experience ‘chills’ to instrumental music, the scientists narrowed down the subject pool to ten. Although the study involves plenty of fancy technology, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and ligand-based positron emission tomography (PET) scanning, the experiment itself was rather straightforward. In other words, sound stirs us at our biological roots.Ī recent paper in Neuroscience by a research team in Montreal, Canada, marks an important step in repealing the precise underpinnings of ‘the potent pleasurable stimulus’ that is music. Blood is even re-directed to the muscles in our legs. The pupils in our eyes dilate, our pulse and blood pressure rise, the electrical conductance of our skin is lowered, and the cerebellum, a brain region associated with bodily movement, becomes strangely active. When listening to our favourite songs, our body betrays all the symptoms of emotional arousal. And yet, even though music says little, it still manages to touch us deeply. Why does music make us feel? On the one hand, music is a purely abstract art form, devoid of language or explicit ideas. Neuroscientist Jonah Lehrer considers the emotional power of music

A change in your normal bowel habits such as more frequent, looser stools, or constipation. Blood in your stools (faeces) which may appear as bright red or very dark and tarry. The early warning signs of bowel cancer can vary, but the most common symptoms include: If you experience any of these symptoms along with a gurgling sound in your bowels, you should speak with your doctor for further evaluation and diagnosis. However, this is typically accompanied by other warning signs such as abdominal pain, bloating or changes in bowel habits like constipation or diarrhea. In some cases, a gurgling sound in the bowel may be indicative of colon cancer. No, colon cancer does not cause increased bowel sounds. The Effects of Colon Cancer on Bowel Sounds If you are unsure about your symptoms, speak to your doctor for further advice on what steps you should take next. It is also important to remember that not all stomach noises mean there is something wrong some people experience them during hunger or digestion which are perfectly normal occurrences. When caught early enough, bowel cancer can often be treated effectively with surgery and other treatments. If you are experiencing any abnormal stomach noises along with other signs such as those described above, it’s important to seek medical advice immediately. This can be especially concerning if accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating or changes in bowel habits such as looser stools or no bowel movements for days. However, if the sound becomes louder or more frequent, it could indicate that something is wrong. These sounds are normal and can be heard when listening with a stethoscope. Planning for 5 grades requires a lot of prep, especially if every grade is using a different media. I narrowed down the topics and objectives that we have already covered this year, and I was able to hone in on the needs of individual grade levels. I didn't over think the lessons, I just kept them very basic and it was a very successful unit. Fortunately, I was able to wave my creative wand and prep an amazing unit-I channeled the pressure to develop something great as my muse. I would never condone planning an entire unit for 5 grade levels on such short notice, but between my master's classes, a spring break wedding, and getting caught up from snow days, prepping for art shows and other stuff going on at school, the lesson planning took a backseat. When I wasn't impressed by any of my old lessons, I started to search Pinterest for something to help me figure out a plan for my K-4 classes. When I walked in the building Tuesday morning, I went through everything in my ocean art visual packet, hoping to pull out the perfect lesson plan based on something that I've already taught. I'll admit I had vaguely written 'Ocean art' on my lesson plans.but that was about as far as I had gotten prior to my week off. Hjalmars, TRITA-MEK-76-01, Technical Reports from the Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanics, S-10044 Stockholm, Sweden," stated to be "Free of cost on request from the Department." Alas, I haven't so far managed to locate a copy of this report. "The given graphical evidence, of which a detailed account is presented elsewhere, 6 seems to leave no reasonable doubt that that during the decade before Boltzmann's death in 1906 at least he himself, Gibbs and Zermelo meant a capital eta when they wrote $H$ for Boltzmann's function." Brush repeated Chapman's plea, and added that "Professor Chapman informed me, a couple of years ago, that he never received any response to this letter." 10 years later yet, in the same journal, Stig Hjalmars wrote in response to Brush's letter: for the links), 30 years later, in a letter to the Americal Journal of Physics, Stephen G. So apparently, you're far from the first person to wonder about this. This use of $H$ must have seemed mysterious to many generations of students, and it would be interesting to know whether any reader can account for its use or give an earlier instance of it." Boltzmann himself wrote $E$ so late as 1893 3, but in 1895 4 he used the letter $H$. It has been suggested that when $H$ was first used for this theorem it was intended to be the capital Greek letter eta: but the first paper known to me in which $H$ is used for Boltzmann's entropy function is one by Burbury 1, who seems to have changed Boltzmann's symbol $E$ to $H$ for no special reason later Burbury used $B$ for an almost identical function, which he called Boltzmann's minimum function 2. "WHEN Boltzmann first published the celebrated theorem now generally known as the $H$-theorem, he used the symbol $E$ (presumably as the first letter of entropy), not $H$. Of course, this just changes the question to "Why did Boltzmann choose the letter $H$, then?" In this letter to the editor, published in Nature in 1937, Sydney Chapman writes: $H$ is then, for example, the $H$ in Boltzmann's famous $H$ theorem." "The form of $H$ will be recognized as that of entropy as defined in certain formulations of statistical mechanics 8 where $p_i$ is the probability of a system being in cell $i$ of its phase space. This is also known as the log loss (or logarithmic loss 3 or logistic loss ) 4 the terms 'log loss' and 'cross-entropy loss' are used. The true probability is the true label, and the given distribution is the predicted value of the current model. Indeed, Shannon writes in his 1948 paper on page 393, after defining $H = -K \sum_^n p_i \log p_i$: Cross-entropy can be used to define a loss function in machine learning and optimization. Wikipedia claims, citing "Gleick 2011", that Shannon got the letter $H$ from Boltzmann's H-theorem.
